Consumption of Agroecological Products in Peru Grows 15% to 20% Annually

Last year, Peru had just 28 specialty stores offering agroecological products. Today, that number has risen to 112, and continues to grow.

According to Moisés Quispe Quispe, Executive Director of the National Association of Ecological Producers of Peru (ANPE-Perú), the consumption of agroecological products in Peru is increasing by 15% to 20% annually.

He noted that, as an example, the number of supermarket chains with a dedicated section for agroecological goods grew from 28 last year to 112 today, with more joining regularly.

“There’s a growing awareness and appreciation for healthy food,” Quispe explained. “Supermarkets now recognize the demand from health-conscious consumers who are actively seeking cleaner options.”

In response, ANPE-Perú has proposed to the Agricultural Commission of the Peruvian Congress the creation of a national Participatory Guarantee System (SGP) Law, which would serve as a legal framework for domestic certification.

“This law would offer critical legal tools for ecological producers and give consumers the assurance that what they’re buying is truly agroecological,” he said. “It could significantly accelerate the growth of this market.”

Quispe also highlighted the growth of ANPE-Perú’s branded eco-stores under the collective label “Frutos de la Tierra” (Fruits of the Earth), which showcase and distribute certified agroecological products.

Currently, there are two eco-stores operating in Cusco and Cajamarca, with plans to open new locations in Piura, Amazonas, and a national flagship store in Lima later this year.
